Wellfleet Plastic Beverage Bottle Ban Not Moving Forward

WELLFLEET — No proposal for a ban on plastic beverage bottles was made at the Wellfleet Selectboard conference last week.
In September 2021, Wellfleet’s ban on commercial single-use plastic water bottles goes into effect. At a selection committee meeting in January 2022, chairman Ryan Curley proposed a broader ban on plastic bottled beverages that would add to the existing ban.
Curley and vice-chairman Michael DeVasto said the water bottle ban made people more likely to buy carbonated or sports drinks high in sugar because the ban only removed single-use water bottles from shelves.
The select committee accepted amendments that may have been added at last month’s meeting, but wanted to spend more time considering the matter before recommending it.
At last week’s meeting, Curley wanted to revoke the plastic beverage bottle ban from the arrest warrant because it was spelled in a way that would affect too many basic beverages.
“Under the draft, it will affect a range of different containers, including staples like milk. You won’t be able to buy milk for less than a gallon, so I want to withdraw this article from the warrant,” Curley said.
Board member Helen Miranda Wilson agreed to retract the article because Wellfleet’s transfer station provided an efficient way to recycle bottles.
